1. Single Pane — Clear Glass
Standard or Float Glass. Older homes and buildings.
2. Single Pane — Tinted, Bronze, or Grey
Color baked into the glass. Already absorbs heat.
3. Single Pane — Tempered Glass
Word TEMPERED etched in corner. Doors, storefronts, showers.
4. Single Pane — Heat-Strengthened Glass
About 2 times stronger than regular glass. Commercial buildings.
5. Double Pane — Clear IGU
Dual Pane or Argon Gas Window. IGCC or IGMA label. Most modern homes and offices.
6. Double Pane — Tinted, Bronze, or Grey IGU
Tinted outer pane plus sealed airspace. Double heat problem.
7. Low-E Glass (Single or Double Pane)
Also called Energy Star, High-Efficiency, or Argon Low-E. Faint blue-green tint. Use a Low-E detector pen to confirm.
8. Triple Pane Glass
Three panes, two sealed airspaces. High-end or cold-climate buildings.
9. Laminated Glass
Plastic layer bonded between glass. Skylights, overhead glass, hurricane windows.
10. Wired, Patterned, or Textured Glass
Wire mesh inside the glass. Older schools and commercial buildings.
11. Any Glass — Safety or Security Film
Schools, government, storefronts, homes. Holds glass together if it breaks.
